ABOUT KHOMLAINAI

Khomlainai is a traditional indigenous martial sport originating from the Boro community of Assam. Rooted in physical discipline, cultural values, and community bonding, Khomlainai represents a holistic system of strength, balance, coordination, and respect. Historically practiced as a test of agility and endurance, the sport continues today through structured training, codified rules, and ethical governance—ensuring its relevance for present and future generations.

Indigenous Identity

Khomlainai belongs to the living cultural heritage of the Boro people. Its practice and promotion remain rooted in community consent, cultural dignity, and traditional ethics.

Structured Sport System

With clearly defined rules, categories, and safety protocols, Khomlainai is practiced as a regulated sport suitable for demonstrations, training programmes, and championships.

Khomlainai promotes gender respect, age-appropriate participation, and inclusive practice while upholding traditional values.

Late Chanakya Brahma

Late Chanakya Brahma dedicated over 20 years to researching and reviving indigenous Boro games. Under his visionary guidance, dozens of traditional games were revived. He successfully establishing several indigenous games on the global platform.

Mijing Narzary is the founder and coach at Chirang Sports Centre, where he trains people in Khomlainai (Bodo wrestling).  Mijing has coaching degrees from Assam Khomlainai Association and National Khomlainai Council.

Khomlainai has been demonstrated in numerous locations across the world. Some of these are listed below:

  • North East Games Festival organised by SAI on 30th January to 2nd February, 2008 in Guwahati.

  • South Asian Martial Arts Competition, Kathmandu, Nepal from 6 to 15 May, 2008.

  • Khomlainai demonstration during a joint meeting of the Bodo Writers' Academy and Kok-Borok Sahitya Sabha at Chengkrukami in Agartala, Tripura on 28 to 30 June, 2008.

  • 1st North East Festival in New Delhi, (November, 2016). In the festival, Union Minister of Human Resources, Prakash Javedekar, Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma visited the Khomlainai arena in the 1 North East Festival in New Delhi praised the Khomlainai demonstration.

  • Kelo India Games 2020, Guwahati, 10th to 22nd January, 2020

  • 1st Janjatiya khel Mahotsav 2023, Odisha 9th to 12th June 2023.

  • 26th National Youth Festival 2023. Hubballi-Dharwad, Karnataka 12th to 16th January 2023.

  • In International Martial Arts Festival, at Zengzou City in China in 2008, 2012, & 2010

  • Khomlainai demonstration and Inter District Competition organized by the Indian Army at Dhekiajuli in Sonitpur district on 11 and 12 November, 2018

  • 27th National Youth Festival 2024 at Nashik, Maharashtra. Maharashtra 12th to 16 January 2024.
